ASTRO LOYALTY ALTERNATIVE FOR PET STORES

Variable-item manufacturer frequent-buyer automation for Square POS and Lightspeed X-Series

PET RETAIL FREQUENT-BUYER MIGRATION

Replacing Astro Loyalty? Keep the manufacturer frequent-buyer programs that make pet retail different.

Preferred Patron™ gives pet retailers a path to run large numbers of product-specific, variable-item digital stamp cards, advance the correct card automatically from connected POS line items, and track free-product redemptions for reporting that supports manufacturer reimbursement workflows. The capability is available with Square POS and Lightspeed Retail X-Series, while eligible customer and in-progress loyalty data can also be evaluated for migration. Your current Astro-connected POS does not have to be Pinogy.

This page is built for pet-store operators replacing Astro Loyalty and for Square representatives helping pet retailers change POS. Whether you are moving to Square or using Lightspeed X-Series, the difficult part is preserving the manufacturer frequent-buyer logic and customer progress that a generic loyalty program may not handle.

THE CORE PET-RETAIL PROBLEM

The hard part is not creating a stamp card. It is automating hundreds of manufacturer frequent-buyer programs and proving what was redeemed.

Many affordable loyalty products can handle a simple storewide punch card. Specialty pet retail can require something very different: many simultaneous programs, mixed qualifying items, automatic product-level earning and a reliable record of the free item issued when a card is completed.

Variable-item cards at real pet-store scale

A manufacturer program may allow several flavors, sizes or related SKUs to count toward one free-product threshold. A retailer can have dozens or hundreds of those programs active at the same time, while one customer participates in several of them concurrently.

  • Map multiple qualifying SKUs to one frequent-buyer package.
  • Issue the applicable digital card when needed.
  • Advance the correct card from the actual Square line item.
  • Keep separate package progress for many programs and customers.

Redemption records for manufacturer reimbursement

Completion is only half of the workflow. When the free product is fulfilled, the retailer needs a durable redemption record that can support its manufacturer reimbursement process and internal reconciliation.

  • Record completed frequent-buyer cards.
  • Track supported free-product reward redemptions.
  • Keep reward fulfillment separate from another paid qualifying purchase.
  • Retain reportable program activity for reimbursement and audit workflows.

Preferred Patron provides the loyalty and redemption records; manufacturer claim submission itself is not implied unless separately implemented.

PET-RETAIL FREQUENT-BUYER FOCUS

This guide focuses on the frequent-buyer details that matter when replacing Astro Loyalty.

This page focuses specifically on the pet-retail problem of replacing Astro-style manufacturer frequent-buyer operations: mixed-SKU cards, active-card migration and redemption records used for reimbursement. For general POS integration details, see the Square POS integration page or the Lightspeed X-Series integration page. For the full history and measured results of one production Square conversion, see the Unleashed migration case study.

WHY THIS GAP EXISTS

The challenge appears when a pet retailer needs the POS to drive manufacturer frequent-buyer activity automatically.

Astro Loyalty remains a well-known pet-retail frequent-buyer platform. For retailers moving to Square POS, Astro's current POS integration documentation states that Square does not currently offer a direct Astro integration and describes a standalone browser-based workflow as an alternative.

Preferred Patron™ can operate this manufacturer frequent-buyer logic from either Square POS or Lightspeed Retail X-Series. The connected POS supplies customer, completed-sale and line-item/product information; Preferred Patron applies the configured package rules and records the resulting earning, completion and supported redemption activity.

NOT JUST PINOGY

Your starting POS can vary.
What matters is preserving the frequent-buyer data you need.

Pinogy is the POS used in the published Unleashed migration case study, but your current system does not need to be Pinogy. Astro documents integrations or integration resources for multiple POS environments, so an Astro replacement or POS migration can start from many different systems.

Examples of current Astro-connected source environments

Astro's current POS documentation includes systems such as eTailPet Sellit Plus, Celerant, Lightspeed Retail R-Series, Lightspeed X, FranPOS, Springboard/Heartland, Pinogy, Shopify/Mighty Apps, BigBangPOS and additional integration resources for platforms such as Epicor, PetShop360 and RetailPro.

If you are a Square representative: do not qualify the opportunity by asking whether the merchant uses Pinogy. Ask whether the pet retailer uses Astro Loyalty and product-specific frequent-buyer programs today, and whether those programs need to continue after the move to Square.

If you use one of these systems today, the key question is what customer, active-card, package, SKU and redemption data can be exported before you change systems. Preferred Patron can evaluate those files, preserve eligible loyalty progress and map the new frequent-buyer program to Square POS or Lightspeed Retail X-Series.

ONE USE CASE, TWO ENTRY POINTS

If you are a pet retailer changing POS, loyalty continuity becomes part of the POS project.

You do not need another generic points program. The difficult requirement is often preserving and continuing product-specific frequent-buyer behavior during the POS transition. If you are keeping Lightspeed X-Series and replacing only Astro, the same loyalty-data continuity work still applies.

For Square sales representatives

You may have a strong Square Retail fit but discover that the prospect depends on Astro-style frequent-buyer programs that are not simply a storewide points balance.

  • Pet retailer is moving from an Astro-connected pet POS or another legacy retail POS to Square.
  • They have many manufacturer, product- or brand-specific buy-X-get-one programs.
  • Customers already have partially completed cards.
  • Several SKUs, flavors or sizes may qualify toward the same card.
  • The retailer needs free-product redemption reporting to support manufacturer reimbursement.

If those requirements are blocking or complicating the Square conversion, Preferred Patron™ should be evaluated.

For pet retailers replacing Astro or changing POS

Your customer loyalty history may include much more than a points total. A successful migration can require the active card, current stamp count, package definition and qualifying product relationships to move together.

  • Preserve eligible customer profiles and active-card progress.
  • Rebuild product-specific frequent-buyer package rules.
  • Use Square or Lightspeed X-Series order line items to advance the correct card.
  • Recognize completed-card reward products without re-crediting them as paid purchases.
  • Maintain completion and free-product redemption reporting that can support manufacturer reimbursement workflows.

Migration scope depends on what the existing provider can export, so the data review should happen before the legacy environment is canceled.

PROVEN IN PET RETAIL

An 11-location pet retailer already made this move.

Unleashed, The Dog & Cat Store moved from Pinogy POS + Astro Loyalty to Square POS + Preferred Patron™. The proof shown here is intentionally brief: it establishes that the manufacturer frequent-buyer model works at scale. The linked case study contains the full migration narrative, timeline and production results.

PET-RETAIL FREQUENT-BUYER CAPABILITIES

Built for the manufacturer-program details generic stamp-card tools often miss.

The differentiator is not the picture of a stamp card. It is operating many variable-item programs automatically and retaining the completion/redemption trail that pet retailers need.

Variable-item / mixed-SKU cards

Several flavors, sizes or related products can be mapped to advance the same manufacturer frequent-buyer package when the program rules allow them to count together.

Large-volume program operation

A retailer can maintain many product-specific package definitions while each customer simultaneously participates in the programs relevant to what they buy.

Automatic POS-driven earning

Completed Square or Lightspeed X-Series line items can be evaluated against configured package rules so staff do not re-enter the purchase in a separate loyalty transaction.

Free-product handling

The program can distinguish qualifying paid purchases from the free product associated with a completed package so reward fulfillment does not become another earned stamp.

Manufacturer reimbursement reporting

Completed cards and supported free-product redemptions remain recorded so the retailer has reportable program history that can support manufacturer reimbursement and reconciliation workflows.

Multi-location loyalty

Preferred Patron can operate a shared customer loyalty relationship across configured participating stores, including supported Square and Lightspeed X-Series multi-location environments.

HOW THE POS POWERS THE MANUFACTURER PROGRAM

Use Square or Lightspeed X-Series as the transaction source while Preferred Patron operates the pet-retail frequent-buyer rules.

This is the pet-specific layer: identifying the customer, interpreting qualifying SKUs, advancing the right variable-item card and retaining the completion/redemption trail.

Integration boundary: Square POS or Lightspeed X-Series remains the point-of-sale system of record. Preferred Patron™ operates the manufacturer frequent-buyer logic and records supported completion/redemption activity. Manufacturer reimbursement submission itself is not implied unless separately implemented.

FOR SQUARE SALES TEAMS

A simple qualification path for pet-retail opportunities.

You do not need to become a loyalty expert. Identify whether the frequent-buyer requirement is more complex than a normal storewide rewards program, then bring Preferred Patron into the evaluation.

REFER WHEN THE PROSPECT SAYS...

  • "We use Astro Loyalty today."
  • "We are moving from our current pet-store POS to Square."
  • "We have hundreds of manufacturer or brand/product frequent-buyer programs."
  • "Customers already have partially completed cards."
  • "We need multiple SKUs, flavors or sizes to count toward the same free-item program."
  • "We need reporting showing completed cards and redeemed free products for manufacturer reimbursement."
Preferred Patron™ has a released Square integration and a documented 11-location pet-retail migration from Pinogy + Astro Loyalty to Square POS. It can automate large numbers of variable-item manufacturer frequent-buyer cards from Square line items and retain completion/redemption history that supports reimbursement reporting.
REFER A PET RETAIL OPPORTUNITY

WHY IT HELPS THE SQUARE SALE

Remove the loyalty objection from the POS switch.

A retailer may like Square but hesitate because its customers have years of active frequent-buyer progress. The Unleashed project demonstrates that the POS conversion and loyalty migration can be planned together rather than forcing customers to restart.

FOR PET RETAILERS

Review the migration data before you shut the old system off.

The most important work often happens before launch: determining which source exports exist and whether they contain enough detail to reconstruct active frequent-buyer progress accurately.

TRY TO OBTAIN

  • Customer/member export with stable IDs and contact information.
  • Active frequent-buyer cards and current progress.
  • Existing stamp/credit counts by customer and package.
  • Package/program definitions and reward thresholds.
  • Qualifying product/SKU relationships.
  • Redemption/completion history used for manufacturer reimbursement if available.
  • Location/store mappings and any program exceptions.

PREFERRED PATRON CAN THEN

  • Assess what can be migrated reliably.
  • Reconcile existing members and duplicate identities.
  • Rebuild digital stamp-card packages and qualifying SKUs.
  • Import eligible in-progress card balances.
  • Connect the selected Square or Lightspeed X-Series environment.
  • Validate earning, free-product redemption and reimbursement-reporting behavior before rollout.
  • Coordinate launch so customer continuity is protected.

Do not assume a customer export is enough.

A customer name and phone number do not tell us that the customer already has 9 of 11 purchases toward a free bag of food. If preserving active-card progress matters, request the broadest available loyalty/frequent-buyer export before access to the prior system ends.

BEYOND FREQUENT BUYER

The migration can preserve the old program while opening a broader retention platform.

Once the core frequent-buyer workflow is stable, the same customer relationship can support additional Preferred Patron™ capabilities.

ASTRO / PET RETAIL MIGRATION FAQ

Questions from pet retailers and Square representatives

Can a pet store move from Astro Loyalty to Square POS without losing active frequent-buyer cards?

Yes, when the necessary source data can be exported and mapped. The source POS does not have to be Pinogy. In the Unleashed migration, Preferred Patron™ imported approximately 57,000 partially completed cards containing 140,980 previously earned stamps while the retailer moved from Pinogy to Square POS.

Does Astro Loyalty currently integrate directly with Square POS?

Astro Loyalty's current POS integration documentation states that Square POS does not currently offer an Astro integration. Astro also describes a standalone browser-based operating option. Retailers that want Square transaction and line-item activity to drive frequent-buyer rules can evaluate Preferred Patron's released Square integration.

Can I replace Astro Loyalty and keep Lightspeed X-Series?

Yes. Preferred Patron™ has a two-way Lightspeed Retail X-Series integration that can receive sales and line-item/product identifiers for loyalty and digital stamp-card logic while synchronizing customer and loyalty information through the supported X-Series workflow.

Does it matter which POS we currently use with Astro Loyalty?

Not necessarily. Pinogy is the source POS in the published Preferred Patron Unleashed case study, but it is not a requirement. Astro currently documents integrations or integration resources for several other POS environments. Migration feasibility depends primarily on the customer, active-card, package, SKU and redemption data that can be exported and mapped before the legacy environment is shut down.

Can several Square or Lightspeed X-Series SKUs qualify toward the same frequent-buyer card?

Yes. Preferred Patron™ can map multiple qualifying product identifiers to one frequent-buyer package when the program rules require it. This was a core requirement in the Unleashed implementation.

Can a customer have many active product-specific stamp cards at the same time?

Yes. Product-specific pet-retail programs can run concurrently. The applicable card is advanced when the connected Square or Lightspeed X-Series sale includes a qualifying mapped SKU.

Does Preferred Patron provide redemption reporting?

Yes. Preferred Patron records completed cards and supported reward/redemption activity so the retailer can report on frequent-buyer completions and free-product issuance according to the configured workflow.

Can the redemption records support manufacturer reimbursement?

Yes. Preferred Patron can retain completed-card and free-product redemption history that supports the retailer's manufacturer reimbursement and reconciliation workflow. Exact report fields depend on the configured program and transaction data. Preferred Patron does not imply that it submits the manufacturer's reimbursement claim unless that process is separately implemented.

Can Preferred Patron preserve every field from Astro Loyalty?

Migration scope depends on the source data that can be exported and how reliably the records can be mapped. Preferred Patron reviews the actual source files first and confirms what can be preserved, transformed or rebuilt before committing to a migration scope.

Does Preferred Patron replace Square POS or Lightspeed X-Series?

No. Your POS remains the system used for products, checkout and sales. Preferred Patron™ operates as the connected loyalty, frequent-buyer, rewards and retention layer around the supported POS workflow.

Is this only for stores leaving Astro Loyalty?

No. The same migration framework can apply to other pet-retail or POS-connected frequent-buyer environments when the merchant needs to preserve customer progress and move loyalty logic into a new operating environment.

Can a Square representative refer a merchant directly to Preferred Patron?

Yes. Use the migration-review request on this page and identify the merchant as a Square pet-retail opportunity. Preferred Patron can review the current POS, frequent-buyer requirements, data availability and desired Square launch path with the merchant.
