Pet Store Loyalty Migration Case Study: Unleashed Moves from Pinogy + Astro Loyalty to Square POS + Preferred Patron™

This Pinogy and Astro Loyalty migration case study documents how Unleashed, The Dog & Cat Store, an independently owned 11-location pet retailer in North Carolina, moved from Pinogy POS to Square POS while preserving a large, active frequent-buyer program. The migration included tens of thousands of partially completed digital stamp cards, previously earned customer progress and more than 200 product-specific package configurations.

Preferred Patron™ was brought into the project through Square’s sales team to provide the loyalty platform for the new Square POS environment and to migrate the customer and frequent-buyer data without forcing established customers to lose the progress they had already earned.

The Starting Point: Pinogy POS and Astro Loyalty

Unleashed had been operating with Pinogy, a point-of-sale platform designed for pet retailers. Pinogy publicly documents a direct integration with Astro Loyalty that sends qualifying frequent-buyer purchases from the POS to a customer’s Astro account and supports free-product redemption during checkout.

That integration was important because frequent-buyer programs are a major part of specialty pet retail. Many manufacturers structure programs around a model such as buy 11 qualifying products and receive the 12th free.

Unleashed had taken this concept much further than a handful of generic punch cards. At the time of migration, the retailer maintained more than 200 distinct frequent-buyer package configurations spanning raw and frozen foods, freeze-dried foods, kibble, treats, supplements, litter, oils and other specialty pet products.

For additional information about the legacy environment, see Pinogy’s Astro Loyalty integration and Astro Loyalty.

Why the POS Change Became a Loyalty Migration Project

Moving customer names and contact information from one system to another would not have been enough.

Unleashed had customers with active frequent-buyer cards that were already partially completed. A customer might have purchased five, seven or ten qualifying products toward a free item before the system conversion.

Starting those customers over at zero was not an acceptable migration strategy.

Core migration requirement: preserve not only the customer account, but also the customer’s active card, the exact progress already earned on that card, and the SKU rules that determine which future purchases advance it.

The migration therefore needed to preserve and reconstruct:

  • Existing customer profiles.
  • Every active frequent-buyer card that was still in progress.
  • The number of stamps already earned on each active card.
  • The frequent-buyer package associated with each card.
  • The qualifying SKUs associated with each package.
  • Packages in which several different SKUs could advance the same card.
  • The distinction between a normal qualifying purchase and a free product issued after completing a card.

Square Brought Preferred Patron Into the Evaluation

While Square was working with Unleashed on the POS conversion, Square’s sales team contacted Preferred Patron looking for an integrated loyalty solution capable of handling the retailer’s migration requirements.

A Preferred Patron demonstration was conducted with the Unleashed team in early December 2025.

“Thanks again for this demo with Unleashed the other day. It’s looking very promising!”
Julia Mulberry, Territory Account Executive, Square — December 5, 2025

One week later, Square confirmed that Unleashed had decided to proceed with both systems.

“I’m excited to say that Unleashed will be moving forward with Square and Preferred Patron!”
Julia Mulberry, Territory Account Executive, Square — December 12, 2025

The implementation plan called for Preferred Patron onboarding to proceed alongside Square onboarding so the new POS and loyalty environments could become operational together.

Unleashed selected the Preferred Patron™ Growth Core edition to support its current frequent-buyer requirements while providing room for future loyalty and customer-retention strategies.

The Hardest Part of the Pinogy and Astro Loyalty Migration

The most difficult part of the Pinogy and Astro Loyalty migration was not importing a customer list. It was obtaining usable source exports for the currently active frequent-buyer cards and reconstructing each customer’s existing progress.

Preferred Patron support worked closely with Unleashed contacts to organize the legacy exports, prepare the package definitions, map product information and validate the converted records.

The initial production migration included:

  • 22,035 existing member records.
  • Approximately 57,000 partially completed frequent-buyer cards.
  • 140,980 existing stamps already earned before conversion.

Those 140,980 stamps represented customer purchase progress accumulated before the Square and Preferred Patron launch. That progress was preserved instead of discarded.

Rebuilding 220 Product-Specific Frequent-Buyer Package Types

Unleashed ultimately required 220 distinct frequent-buyer package types in Preferred Patron.

The programs cover a wide range of specialty pet products and package sizes from brands and product families such as Bones & Co, Primal, Open Farm, Smallbatch, Stella & Chewy’s, Vital Essentials, OC Raw, Raw Dynamic, Savage Cat, Carna4, Koha, The Honest Kitchen, Steve’s Real Food and Shepherd Boy Farms.

The important technical requirement was that a stamp card was not necessarily tied to one SKU.

Multiple flavors, sizes or related products could qualify for the same frequent-buyer package. Preferred Patron therefore needed to map several individual Square catalog SKUs to a single package when the program rules required it.

Example: a customer can purchase one of several qualifying SKUs and have that purchase advance the same digital frequent-buyer card. The loyalty rule is attached to the package relationship, not limited to one product identifier.

How the Square POS + Preferred Patron Integration Works

Square POS
Records the completed order and provides customer and line-item transaction details.
Preferred Patron™
Evaluates purchased SKUs, identifies the applicable package and advances the correct customer’s stamp card.

After the migration, Square POS became the transaction source and Preferred Patron became the loyalty engine.

Square orders are submitted with line-item information. Preferred Patron evaluates the SKU data to determine whether a purchased item belongs to one of Unleashed’s configured frequent-buyer packages.

When a qualifying SKU is recognized, the appropriate customer’s card is advanced automatically.

The integration also distinguishes a normal purchased SKU from the free item associated with a completed package. This prevents a reward product from being incorrectly treated as another paid qualifying purchase.

The result is a workflow in which Square records the transaction while Preferred Patron applies the loyalty logic, including SKU-specific frequent-buyer rules across hundreds of package configurations.

March 6–11, 2026: Production Migration Across 11 Stores

Production migration was performed from March 6 through March 11, 2026.

Preferred Patron support coordinated directly with Unleashed contacts to obtain and organize the source exports, prepare the new loyalty environment, validate imported records and train staff.

Store cutovers were scheduled around the close of business, with migrated customer and frequent-buyer information prepared for use by the next business day.

The migration progressed without disruption to the loyalty data being carried forward. Imported records were validated for accuracy, staff training was brief, and the ongoing system workflow was designed to be intuitive for store personnel.

Most importantly, customers did not have to re-enroll or restart their partially completed frequent-buyer cards simply because the retailer changed POS and loyalty platforms.

Measured Results After the Migration

The migrated database did not remain a static copy of the previous program. The Square integration continued enrolling customers and processing frequent-buyer activity after launch.

As of August 24, 2026, Preferred Patron production records show:

Production Metric Result
Existing member profiles imported during migration 22,035
Additional members enrolled post-migration through the Square POS integration 11,964
Partially completed stamp cards migrated ~57,000
Previously earned stamps migrated 140,980
Distinct frequent-buyer package types 220
Stamp cards issued to date ~72,000
Stamps recorded to date ~825,000
Stamp cards fully completed ~5,200
Free products issued from completed frequent-buyer programs ~3,600

Production activity figures above reflect Preferred Patron system records as of August 24, 2026.

What This Migration Proves

The Unleashed project demonstrates an important distinction between starting a new loyalty program and successfully migrating an established one.

The Pinogy and Astro Loyalty migration demonstrates that moving to a new POS does not necessarily require a retailer to abandon partially completed rewards or reset established customer progress.

For an established retailer, the valuable data held by the previous loyalty system may extend far beyond a customer name and a points balance. It can include active rewards, partially completed cards, product-level purchase progress, multiple concurrent programs, SKU relationships and years of customer participation.

A migration strategy should preserve as much of that earned customer value as the available source data allows.

For Unleashed, the transition preserved 22,035 customer profiles, approximately 57,000 active cards and 140,980 previously earned stamps while rebuilding the program around 220 product-specific package types and a new Square POS transaction workflow.

Why This Matters for Retailers Considering a Pinogy or Astro Loyalty Alternative

Changing a POS or loyalty platform does not automatically mean abandoning customer history or resetting existing rewards.

Preferred Patron can evaluate available exports from an existing POS or loyalty provider, determine which customer and reward data can be preserved, map product relationships and loyalty rules, and coordinate the conversion around a new POS rollout.

The Unleashed Pinogy and Astro Loyalty migration provides a real production example of moving a multi-location pet retailer to Square POS and Preferred Patron while preserving active frequent-buyer progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Pinogy and Astro Loyalty migration preserve active frequent-buyer cards?

Yes, when the necessary source information can be exported and mapped. In the Unleashed migration, Preferred Patron imported approximately 57,000 partially completed frequent-buyer cards containing 140,980 previously earned stamps while the retailer transitioned to Square POS.

Can Preferred Patron migrate partially completed Astro Loyalty frequent-buyer cards?

The Unleashed project demonstrates that active frequent-buyer card progress can be migrated when sufficient source data is available. Existing card records and their current progress were mapped into Preferred Patron so customers did not have to restart after conversion.

Is Preferred Patron an alternative to Astro Loyalty?

Preferred Patron can serve as the loyalty platform for retailers that need points, rewards, digital stamp cards, customer segmentation, marketing automation and POS integration. Whether it is the right Astro Loyalty alternative depends on the retailer’s program requirements and the data available for migration.

Is Preferred Patron an alternative to the loyalty features previously used with Pinogy POS?

Yes. Preferred Patron can operate independently of Pinogy and integrate with other commerce environments, including Square POS. The Unleashed migration moved an established pet-retail frequent-buyer program from the Pinogy/Astro environment into Preferred Patron while the retailer changed its POS to Square.

Does Preferred Patron integrate with Square POS?

Yes. Preferred Patron supports Square POS integration for customer and transaction activity. In the Unleashed implementation, Square order line items provide SKU-level transaction information used to determine which frequent-buyer package should receive credit.

Can several SKUs qualify for the same digital stamp card?

Yes. Unleashed required frequent-buyer packages where several qualifying SKUs could advance a single card. Preferred Patron maps eligible product identifiers to the applicable package and evaluates the Square order line items when transactions are processed.

How many different frequent-buyer or stamp-card programs can a retailer operate?

Unleashed is currently operating 220 distinct frequent-buyer package types in Preferred Patron. This supports a large catalog of product-specific programs rather than limiting the retailer to only a few generic stamp-card designs.

Did Unleashed customers have to restart their stamp cards after the migration?

No. Approximately 140,980 previously earned stamps across roughly 57,000 partially completed cards were included in the initial migration.

How many customers were migrated?

The initial conversion included 22,035 existing member profiles. By August 24, 2026, another 11,964 members had enrolled post-migration through the Square POS integration.

What activity has the new program processed since migration?

As of August 24, 2026, the program had approximately 72,000 stamp cards issued, approximately 825,000 stamps recorded, approximately 5,200 completed cards and approximately 3,600 free products issued from completed frequent-buyer programs.

Can Preferred Patron migrate loyalty data from other POS or loyalty platforms?

Yes. Migration scope depends on the data the prior platform can provide and how balances, rewards, cards, transaction history and other program state are represented. Preferred Patron support can review available source data before a migration plan is finalized.
